Life Painting: 4-Color Palette

Instructor: Diego Larguia

Prerequisites: Figure Drawing, Beginning Oil Painting or equivalent

This life painting class is based on the works of painter Anders Zorn, who executed his paintings exclusively with a limited palette. Students work from a live model and learn to mix skin tones using Zorn's palette of the following colors only:

  • titanium white
  • yellow ochre
  • ivory black
  • cadmium red light

The first class of the semester is dedicated to a study of Zorn paintings and the concept of using a limited color palette. Students will view reproductions of his paintings, previously-executed limited-color  instructor demonstrations and color charts illustrating the range of color that can be achieved using the above paint colors only. The instructor will also give a couple of painting demonstrations working with the limited palette.

There will be suggested homework assignments of copies of Zorn paintings, which will be viewed and discussed in class.

This class takes place in our 3rd floor atelier with ample north light, which can be supplemented with numerous artificial lighting options.

This class is open to intermediate and advanced oil painting students.
