Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting. The word derives from the ancient Greek: kallos meaning "beauty" and graphẽ "writing". It is the art of giving form to letters in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner. The elegance of a hand-lettered invitation, place card, letter or piece of art work cannot be matched, especially by a machine!
In the fall semester, Calligraphy Instructor Patti Adams will introduce you to two hands during this ten-week course: Foundational and Gothic. We will focus on consistent size, shape and spacing of the letterforms and study basic layout and design as you create your own artwork. The course is also focused on individual guided student practice and will include instructor demonstrations and viewing of many samples of calligraphic art.
The Foundational hand, based on the circular “o,” is the perfect training hand when starting calligraphy. As well as being a beautiful, readable hand, it provides a great foundation for more advanced letterforms. It is a simple and elegant script and has many uses when writing calligraphy.
The Gothic hand is valued for its formal, striking, and ornamental qualities. It has a very definite medieval look to it so it’s not difficult to produce an impressive effect in Gothic. It has always been a favorite with calligraphers!
In this class you will learn how to:
• make each letter of the Foundational and Gothic hands
• learn about inks, calligraphic materials and pens
• peruse wonderful calligraphy books
• create your own beautiful work of art
All levels of students are welcome to attend this class, including beginning students without any prior calligraphy experience or instruction.
