The Classical Tradition

Successful art must be technically good, informed by a knowledge of the craft, aesthetically pleasing in line, color and form, and emotionally revealing in line quality, brush strokes and inspiration.  The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and its faculty are dedicated to the concept than an artist - any kind of artist - must be firmly grounded in the fundamentals of drawing and painting from life.

Contemporary innovation comes and goes, and it is the duty of an art school to be aware of it and support it.  Yet it must balance against traditions that have withstood the test of time.  The Academy believes that a re-investigation of traditional aesthetic values forms the strongest foundation for eventual creative expression and stylistic development.
