#'s B, HB, H - NO very soft pencils with watercolor, as they leave greasy marks and are too hard to erase, thereby ruining the surface of the paper.
Erasers: Kneaded erasers (think 'needed')
Pens: Cartridge pens, India ink markers, fine to bold
Watercolor pad, at least 11" x 14," hot press if you like a smooth surface (often best for detailed work,) cold if you prefer a rougher, ‘toothier’ surface
Single sheets of hot and/or cold press watercolor paper (after the 3rd week)
'Thinking' sketchbook, approximately 11"x14" or larger if preferred, Strathmore Bristol is excellent.
Sable or Sabelline brushes
One #12 round, one #8 round, one #4 or #6 round brushes Liner or "Rigger" brushes,#2, #4 and #6, and others if you like. "Riggers" are used by sign letterers and have great flexibility.
One or two #0, #1, or #2 sabellines for detailed work
Chinese brushes with bamboo shafts (a range of sizes is recommended) are excellent for watercolor, also inexpensive.
3/4" Oval Wash, Simply Simmons is a good choice
Winsor & Newton, Grumbacher, Rowney, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Sennelier are all fine, as may be other brands with which I am unfamiliar. New things emerge every day.
For the first class: Prussian Blue, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson, viridian green, neutral tint, Payne's Grey, ivory black, sepia,
You may wish to acquire more colors. Recommended are:
Reds: Vermillion or Cadmium red light, Cadmium Red Medium, Scarlet Lake, Carmine, Rose Madder
Blues: Ultramarine blue,Thalo Blue, Cerulean Blue, Manganese Blue, cobalt blue
Greens: Thalo Green, Prussian Green, Hookers Green, Winsor Green,Cobalt Green, Terra Verte
Yellows: Cadmium yellow pale or light, yellow ochre, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Naples Yellow, Gamboges, Chrome Yellow
Violet/Purple: Cobalt Violet (Light, Medium), Purple Lake, Winsor Violet (dioxazine violet)
Orange: Cadmium Orange, Chrome Orange
Earth Tones: Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber
The Robert Wood watercolor palette is excellent, however, a comparable, white plastic palette will do, as will several small white plastic palettes.
Paper Towels: One roll per person - ALWAYS
Water containers, large plastic
Q-Tips - a very important tool!! Johnson & Johnson are a sure thing, large box.
