Alla Prima Oil Painting
Instructor: Billy Solitario
Prerequisite: Beginning Oil Painting or equivalent
Alla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt), or wet-on-wet, is a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint. This technique requires a fast way of working, because the painting has to be finished before the first layers have dried.
This alla prima painting class is for students who have taken at least a beginning oil painting class. Each week two to three new still lives are set up by the instructor. Students have the three-hour class to work and may stay until 4pm that day to finish their painting. The instructor will show techniques of alla prima painting in class demonstrations, and images of alla prima paintings will be discussed for inspiration.
This class meets in our third-floor northlit studio, with extra artificial lighting available if needed. Still life setups for this class may not be left up between classes.
