Photography Course Descriptions

Digital 101

Instructor: Helen Reed

This 8 week course will teach you the basics of using your digital SLR camera and creating images. We will start by identifying your camera and its basic functions.  You will then learn how to properly expose an image using aperture, shutter speed, and ISO as well as the characteristics of these controls and how they translate visually. We will examine and practice the elements of composition as they pertain to photography, and learn to create compelling and aesthetically pleasing images.

This course will also delve into how to shoot Documentary and Portrait Photography, as well as the editing techniques used in Adobe Photoshop . We will also go over proper file storage, workflow, and archiving data.  

We will close the session with an exercise on finding your visual voice using the knowledge acquired during the 8 weeks.

Digital 101 SLR Photography

Instructor: Zack Smith

This 8 week course will teach you the basics of your digital SLR camera as well as the buttons, functions, and features used to get the most out of your photography. We will start as if you just bought the camera and teach you all about: Resolution, ISO, Exposure, White Balance and how these play into your image making. We will also spend time on the fundamentals of photography such as: Focal Length, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and Composition.

This course will also delve into how to shoot better Documentary, Portrait, and Macro Photography as well as the editing techniques used with the Photoshop Creative Cloud package. We will also go over proper file storage, workflow, and archiving data.

Prerequisite: Students must have a digital SLR camera and know how to use their home computer.

Fundamentals of Photography

Instructor: Owen Murphy

This course is an introduction to basic camera functions: shutter speeds, f-stops, depth of field and metering. It also includes an introduction to black & white photography, major types of cameras, camera accessories, lenses, etc. Coursework includes assignments, field trips and critiques.

Prerequisite:  Students must have an SLR camera.

Beyond the Basics

Instructor: Owen Murphy

This is an intermediate class for photographers who have an understanding of how their camera functions. This class builds upon the assignments from the introductory class and explores workflow, file types and photo editing. The assignments for this class continue to build upon those from the Fundamentals of Photography class, such as movement, still life, the self portrait and creative lighting.

Prerequisites:

  • students must have an SLR camera
  • completion of the Fundamentals of Photography or Digital 101 class, or a good understanding of your SLR camera is required for this course
