Color Theory & Basic Design

Instructors: Auseklis Ozols, Patti Adams

An introduction to the essentials of color theory and basic design. The student is introduced to various approaches to color perception, both historical and current. Class work consists of lectures in the form of demonstrations and experiments, as well as the preparation of color charts. The student works twoard the mastery of color mixtures and harmonies to be executed in a series of original designs. The class works in gouache.

Beginning Oil Painting

Instructors:

Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing

This is an introduction to the basic materials and traditional techniques of oil painting. Students use inanimate objects as themes for pictorial composition. The knowledge students acquire in Beginning Oil Painting is absolutely essential to all other oil painting classes, including all Still Life, Figure, Portrait, and Landscape courses.

Intermediate Still Life Painting - Oil

Instructors: Darrell Brown

Prerequisite: Beginning Oil Painting

This course requires some familiarity with painting, and it builds on the skills learned in Beginning Oil Painting. It gives attention to students' individual preferences for subject matter in painting in the still life genre.

Advanced Still Life Painting - Oil

Instructor: Auseklis Ozols

Prerequisite: Intermediate Still Life Painting

This course continues to build upon the skills learned in Beginning Oil Painting and Intermediate Still Life Oil Painting. More involved still life set-ups are used in order to teach the student to see the true nature and form of objects. The highest attention will be given to composition, eventually leading to the evolution of a personal style.


Abstract Acrylic Painting:
Beginning/Intermediate and Advanced

Prerequisite for Advanced Abstract:
Beginning & Intermediate Abstract

The Abstract Acrylic courses concentrate on non-objective painting, where the formal elements of line color, texture and pattern take precedence over representational themes. Included are exercises in basic design and color mixtures. The dynamics of scale, rhythm and harmony are studied. The student is introduced to "process painting," collage, assemblage and other contemporary formats in an effort to develop personal stylistic themes. The classes work in acrylic. No art experience is necessary to join the Beginning & Intermediate Abstract Acrylic class with Zona Wainwright.

Painting with Gouache

Instructor: Jean Cassels

Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing

Gouache is an amazingly versatile medium, used to render precise realism or impressionism. In this class we cover a wide range of creative possibilities.

Gouache may be used with the techniques of watercolor or of oil, or in combination of both, and with unique techniques such as black-ink-wash-off. There will be various in-class assignments as well as opportunity for more individual investigations and expression with assignments done outside of class.

Beginning Life Painting

Instructors: Claude EllenderPhil Sandusky, Diego Larguia

Prerequisites: Life Drawing, Beginning Oil Painting

This course is for students who have reached the intermediate or advanced stages of study in oil painting and have had significant experience in drawing the human figure. The class works from a permanent pose of a nude model. The student prepares a composition and by the end of the semester executes a finished figure painting.

Advanced Life Painting

Advanced Life Painting is for students who wish to pursue a stylistic development and further mastery of the complexities of figure painting. The model in this course will often be posed in an environment designed to enhance compositional possibilities.


Painting the Clothed Figure

Painting the Clothed Figure Painting will focus on painting the clothed figure from life, considering themes and props. The class offers the possibility to work on larger scale paintings.

Introduction to the traditional portrait in oil. An understanding of the planes of the head and its proportions is the basis of the search for a likeness.

For the advanced student who wishes to pursue stylistic and compositional elements that strengthen the work. The model is posed in thematic situations.

This class works outdoors at a pre-selected site with the intent to design and execute a finished painting.

Advanced Landscape Painting

Prerequisite: Landscape Painting

This course builds on the knowledge and experience students gained by working with an instructor in the field doing landscapes from life.


Painting Clouds

Instructor: Billy Solitario

Prerequisite: Beginning Oil Painting

This landscape painting class focuses on painting clouds and sky with a mixture of painting outdoors at a pre-selected site in New Orleans with good view of the sky, and painting indoors in our 3rd floor studio with reference photos.

Painting the Masters

Prerequisite: Beginning Oil Painting

Copying masterpieces has been one of the cornerstones of traditional art education for a long time.  In this class you will choose a work of art from realism or impressionism and learn to copy it with oil paint from a print.  The process will help students learn techniques and provides and in-depth appreciation of the chosen artist’s way of working.
