Drawing Course Descriptions

Beginning Drawing

Instructors: Darrell Brown, Jean Cassels, Gus Hoffman

An introduction to the basic skills of traditional drawing. The laws of linear perspective, proportion and scale are studied. The student works from the basic forms of nature - the cube, the cylinder, the sphere. These studies are essential to the beginning student's development.

Intermediate Drawing

Instructors: Darrell Brown, Jean Cassels

Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing

This course is the direct continuation of Beginning Drawing. The student continues to work on perspective, the pattern of value and the effect of light on objects. Line quality, texture and pattern are studied from still life arrangements, which include organic form as well as everyday objects with an emphasis on composition and the emotional quality of a drawing. Materials include graphite and charcoal.

Advanced Drawing

Instructor: Jean Cassels

Prerequisite: Intermediate Drawing

This course is the direct continuation of Intermediate Drawing. The student continues to study perspective, including interior perspective with a continued emphasis on composition, value pattern, and the emotional quality of the drawing. Materials include graphite, charcoal, white conte, and India ink with pen and brush.


Life (Figure) Drawing

Instructors: Auseklis OzolsCarol Peebles, Claude Ellender, Gretchen Krasny

Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing

Instruction includes drawing the human figure and the study of gesture, contour, and the dynamics of the figure. The course stresses a cursory understanding of basic anatomy as a foundation for creative expression. Classical and contemporary approaches are taught.

Advanced Life Drawing

Instructor: Carol Peebles

Prerequisite:
Beginning Drawing & Carol's Life Drawing
an ability to measure and know the difference between sight-sizing and measuring
an ability to apply quadrants and achieve accurate height to width before beginning

This class is for advanced students only, and proficiency in life drawing, measuring, applying quadrants and understanding value relationships is assumed.  Students will work on 3-week poses, and the goal of the class will be long, detailed, finished drawings in charcoal.


Portrait Drawing

Instructor: Carol Peebles

Prerequisite: Life Drawing

This is a prerequisite for portrait painting courses. The student works from a live protrait model to study the structure of the head and its relationship to the body.
