prerequisites: there are no prerequisites for this class

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting.  The word derives from the ancient Greek: kallos meaning "beauty" and graphẽ "writing".  It is the art of giving form to letters in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner.

This summer, these five classes are open to everyone wanting to learn calligraphy or improve their skills! We will study the italic hand, focusing on consistent size, shape, slant and spacing of the letterforms and layout design as you create your own artwork. The course will focus on individual guided student practice and will include instructor demonstrations and viewing of many samples of calligraphic art.

This beginning calligraphy class will focus on the italic alphabet. You will learn how to:
• make each letter of the italic alphabet
• learn about inks, calligraphic materials and pens
• peruse wonderful calligraphy books
• create your own beautiful work of art
