Martha Guthrie          

Martha Sigler Guthrie, a well-known Louisiana watercolorist, has been painting since her early childhood. She has been a professional artist for more than thirty-five years.  During this time, she has served as juror and judge for a number of art organizations, both in the New Orleans area and elsewhere.  She has given numerous demonstrations and workshops on painting watercolor still life.

Born in Missouri, Ms Guthrie grew up in Memphis, TN, where she attended Rhodes College and the Memphis Academy of Art.  After coming to Louisiana with her family in 1966, she studied at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.  Since moving to New Orleans, she has continued her studies at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art.  She also counts the special studies with a number of the country's leading watercolorists as a major part of her training.

During her career she has participated in many juried and one-person exhibits.  A few of her recent acceptances into national juried shows and awards are:

• National Watercolor Society, signature member
• Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors 2001, the Pulsifer Award
• Audubon Artists, full membership 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 Exhibitions, New York City
• Southwestern Watercolor Society, signature member.  National Exhibition  Dallas, TX,  2000, 2001, 2002,2003, Grumbacher Gold Medal Award, 2002
• Louisiana Watercolor Society, signature member since 1980.  National Exhibition 1987 Grumbacher Silver Medal Award, 2001 Edward DuPont Award, 2005
• Western Federation of Watercolor Societies 2001, 2002, 2004 Exhibitions, Daniel Smith Award 2002
• Mississippi Watercolor Society, signature member
• Southern Watercolor Society, signature member

Her works appear in the permanent collections of:

• The Margaret Harwell Art Museum, Missouri
• The Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans, LA
• The New Orleans World Trade Center
• The New Orleans Academy of Fine Art

Martha currently teaches Intermediate and Advanced Watercolor Still Life at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art.
