Beginning Clay Sculpture

This course is an introduction to the techniques of handbuilt clay sculpture. Projects will involve clay working methods of pinching, coil, modeling, and slab construction, use of tools, and familiarization with different clay bodies. In addition, this course addresses firing, surface treatment, and display options.

Ceramic Sculpture

Instructor: Madeleine Faust

This course introduces the techniques involved in making fired clay sculpture. Projects will include the pinching method of manipulating clay, coiling, slab construction, and relief carving, with animal and plant forms as inspiration. A materials fee will be required.

Beginning Figure Sculpture

Instructor: Saskia Ozols Eubanks

An introduction to the modeling of the figure in clay. the geometry of the figure, its anatomy and their relation to gravity are studied. Techniques of proportion dynamics and armature construction are taught.

Intermediate & Advanced Figure Sculpture

Prerequisite: Beginning Figure Sculpture
For students with substantial experience in modeling the figure from life. the class stresses fundamentals, never forgetting that the first one is feeling. Composition, proportion, form, volume, weight and surface modeling are emphasized. The student works twoard a more personal expression through the mastery of fundamentals.

Portrait Sculpture

Prerequisite: Figure Sculpture
An introduction to the modeling of a three dimensional portrait in clay. The class works from a live model. Various modeling techniques, methods of measurement and basic anatomy are discussed.

Mold Making & Casting
Prerequisite: See description.
This course is for advanced students to pursue the technical challenges of reproducing sculpture in different materials. A finished piece of sculpture, approved by the instructor, is required for entering the class. A full explanation of cost and procedure will be given upon interview with the instructor.
