Drawing
Drawing is the handmaiden of the arts, the basis of all eventual understanding of every form of painting, including abstract, figure, landscape, et cetera. Classes stress the comprehension of value, proportion and scale. Students are introduced to various media, such as pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, and pen & ink. An introduction to the basic skills of traditional drawing. The laws of linear perspective, proportion and scale are studied. The student works from the basic forms of nature - the cube, the cylinder, the sphere. These studies are essential to the beginning student's development.
Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing
This course is the direct continuation of Beginning Drawing. The student continues to develop mastery of value and the effect of light on objects. Line quality, texture and pattern are studied from still life arrangements, which include organic form as well as everyday objects. Special attention is given to drawing drapery. Materials include pencil, charcoal and India ink.
Advanced Drawing
Prerequisite: Intermediate Drawing
This course expands upon the material covered in Intermediate Drawing.
Prerequisite: Intermediate Drawing
Instruction includes drawing the human figure and the study of gesture, contour, and the dynamics of the figure. The course stresses a cursory understanding of basic anatomy as a foundation for creative expression. Classical and contemporary approaches are taught.
Prerequisite:Life Drawing
This is a prerequisite for portrait painting courses. The student works from a live protrait model to study the sturcture of the head and its relationship to the body.
Prerequisite:Life Drawing
An introduction to the proportions, skeletal structure, musculature and movements of animals. Students will spend the first week in the studio, drawing the skeleton of the chosen animal and then copying the musculature to become familiar with its forms. The rest of the semester will be spent at the zoo, drawing and observing from life the challenge of movement and spirit indivual to each animal we study.
This course is designed for plastic surgeons and medical students who will enter that profession. We focus on drawing particular aspects of the human face and figure with the goal of learning to use drawing as a means of presenting to patients the process and results of plastic surgery.
