The Academy accepts students of varying levels of attainment, often beginners work alongside more advanced students. Students with degrees in art from other schools enter our studios to perfect skills. Beginners entering the school are encouraged to follow basic direction. An understanding of traditional materials and techniques is a prerequisite to the venture of experimental media. Familiarity with materials such as charcoal and conte crayon precede painting assessment. Students are encouraged to proceed at their own pace.

For beginning students we recommend:

Color & Design
Beginning Drawing
Art History
Beginning Watercolor
Beginning Oil Painting

The basis of study is the student-model-instructor relationship. The method of instruction is by individual and group criticism of studio work. The purpose of the training is to develop students' natural ability and to enable them to acquire and develop technique. The highest attention is given to design, composition and personal innovation.

Materials listed for respective courses can be obtained by calling the school office. Classes that do not fill are subject to cancellation.

Open Figure Studio Sessions

In addition to advanced figure studio courses, the Academy offers figure studio sessions for anyone who wants to work with a model on his/her own. A monitor will attend such sessions to set the model's poses, time the poses, and direct the group. The monitor will not provide instruction or guidance. Students sign up for a month at a time, paying for a month in advance. Please call (504) 899-8111 to inquire.

While the studio sessions are available to students of all levels, the studios courses are for advanced students only. Thos who wish to apply for studio courses must meet the prerequisites or provide a portfolio to the instructor, in order to demonstrate sufficient experience.
